This tree has a stout greyish trunk with horizontal branches that form a spreading rounded crown.
Royal Poinciana is grown for its flowers and spreading crown. It is planted in parks and gardens as a lawn specimen for shade or as a street tree. It is suitable for coastal regions establishing in 3 - 4 years and is moderately long lived.
Leaves: Compound bippinate leaves arranged alternatively with an entire margin. Light green in colour. 300 to 500mm long.
Flowers: Red tubulate shaped flowers arranged in a raceme inflorescence. 100 to 125mm in diameter.
Fruit: Brown to black legume type fruit that are 650 to 700mm long.
Bark: Light brown fissured or wrinkled.
